SERMON NOTES
MARCH 4:35-41 (NLT)
(35) As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” (36) So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). (37) But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. (38) Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” (39) When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. (40) Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (41) The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
STORMS MAKE IT EASY TO FORGET YOUR HISTORY WITH JESUS
- The storms of our life can make us forget about all the times God showed up with grace, mercy, compassion, and deliverance.
- These storms reveal how our trust and reliance in God can always be strengthened.
- It’s easy to forget what you’ve been taught when you’re being tested.
STORMS REVEAL THE POWER JESUS HAS OVER THE CHAOS IN YOUR LIFE
- Jesus rebuked the wind and waves in the same way He would rebuke a demonic attack.
- Don’t judge someone else’s chaos.
- There’s nothing like being rescued by Jesus but that does imply that there are storms around us, within us, or coming against us.
STORMS ARE OFTEN USED BY GOD TO GROW YOUR FAITH
- Jesus used this storm to teach the disciples that faith is designed to grow.
- Even if all you have is a small amount of faith, it’s still real faith.
- Sometimes we can spend so much time focusing on the storm that we actually forget about the One who has the power to calm all the chaos.
- Use the storms of your life as an opportunity to watch God work, to build your faith, and to walk closely with Him even in the midst of chaos.
